Projects

The building and design projects at and in the Dom St. Marien in Wurzen are presented below.

The church does not have its own congregation that is responsible for maintenance. The Chapter, a centuries-old institution, currently with seven canons from across Saxony working on an honorary basis, relies to a large extent on donations in its efforts to maintain and bring life to the building that has the longest tradition in the town of Wurzen.

If you would like to support one or more of our current investment projects by means of a donation, the Chapter would be very pleased – and the church will be thankful!

The church lighting project was successfully completed

The previous “rustic“ church lighting, plain light bulbs on a wire, regarded as a temporary measure, used a lot of power, provided inadequate illumination and was by no means suitable aesthetically for the space. Thanks to the new lighting with state-of-the-art LED technology, the lighting below for church services or concerts is much better, and the beautiful cross-vaulting is illuminated above. The energy requirement is reduced to 25% of the previous level. Thanks to many donors, we were able to acquire 14 lights in 2014 for the 900th anniversary of the consecration of the church.

Accessibility project

In 2021, after two years of work and with many difficulties, the project to make the main entrance to the church fully accessible was completed. The steps dating from 1932 were largely retained. The ramp suitable for persons with disabilities, combined with a continuation of the steps to the side and a slight adaptation of the ground level outside the church, makes this impression that this has always been the situation.

The most urgent work is:

Fire precautions:

The fire in the roof of Notre Dame in Paris in 2019 showed us that preventive measures in the Wurzener Dom must be further improved.

Costs approx. 25,000 €

Lectern with platform:

Following the commissioning of the mobile altar made from oak in 2020, completion of the lectern and platform in a matching style remains to be carried out.

Costs: 1,500 €

Renovation of steps in the north tower:

In the context of fire prevention measures (especially the towers and the roof), a thorough renovation of the steps in the north tower is necessary. It is at the same time the emergency stair from the rehearsal room on the first floor and gives access to the towers, roof spaces and bells.

Costs: approx. 6.000 €
