Superintendent i. R. Horst Schulze

Canon from 30 June 1982 – dean from 1982 to 2009 – canon emeritus from 2010 to 2021

Horst Schulze

On 3 June 2021 Horst Schulze, for many years a canon, dean of the Chapter and an honorary citizen of Wurzen, passed away in Wurzen in his 87th year.

From 1980 until his retirement in 2000 he was a pastor in Wurzen and superintendent of the Wurzen church district. In additional to his work as a minister for his congregation and district, he performed exceptional work for the restoration and preservation of St Mary’s Church.

When he took up his duties, the building was in a decayed condition. Horst Schulze looked for like-minded persons – experts and helpers – and indefatigably drove the work ahead when it had to be carried out under conditions that were at times highly unfavourable. This included a constant struggle against shortages of supplies and the arbitrary actions of authorities.

However, he was not only concerned with external matters, with the beautiful building. He wanted the church to be the place and the setting for proclaiming the word of God in many and various ways, to be the building where the congregation met for joyful or other occasions, for celebration and commemoration.

Horst Schulze’s diverse activities had a great impact and will, it is to be hoped, never be forgotten. The Chapter of Wurzen remembers him with great esteem and gratitude.
